Join the Younger Lawyers Division as they host Morning at the Federal Courthouse on Wednesday, June 12, 2024. Morning at the Federal Courthouse gives young lawyers and law students/summer associates an opportunity to observe and learn about federal practice. Registration starts at 8 am and the program will begin at 8:30 am in U.S. District Court. During this program participants will choose their schedule from court proceedings and panel discussions presented by federal practitioners and judges. A full agenda will be given at check-in.

CLE Schedule: (3 hours of CLE for Young Lawyers)

  • 8 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. Registration

  • 8:30 a.m. – 9 a.m. Welcome remarks

  • 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Observe civil motion and/or criminal docket of participating Judges. This schedule will be distributed at registration. If you would like the agenda in advance, please contact the FBA Office.

  • 9:00 -10:00 a.m. AI in the Practice of Law: How lawyers and judges are using and experiencing artificial intelligence in every day practice. (1 hour) Join Hal D. Ungar, shareholder at Ogletree Deakins, and Magistrate Judge Eva Dossier, for an informal discussion about this burgeoning technology, the ways lawyers and Judges are using it to support their career objectives, and the potential pitfalls associated with misuse of the technology. Panelists: Hal D Ungar, shareholder at Ogletree Deakins; and Magistrate Judge Eva Dossier.

  • 10:10-11:10 a.m. Federal Practice Tips for Young Lawyers (1 hour) Judge Zainey will discuss the nuts and bolts of practicing in federal court. He will highlight some of the differences between state and federal practice and discuss what young lawyers should expect when litigating federal cases. One of the biggest tips for young lawyers practicing in federal court is to know the local rules! Each court is different, and even some judges have their own rules. Panelists: The Hon.   • 11:20 a.m.-12:20 p.m. Are you "out of order"? (1 professionalism hour) Litigation is hard. Life is harder. Using the Code of Professionalism as a guide, Magistrate Judge Janis van Meerveld, lawyer and life coach Erin Rigsby Hawkins, and lawyer, City Council member, and mental health advocate Joe Giarrusso provide and inside look at the role of courts and counsel in declining civility and its impact on attorney mental health and wellness. Panelists: The Hon. Janis van Meerveld, Magistrate Judge, U.S.D.C. – EDLA; Attorney and New Orleans City Council member Joe Giarrusso; and lawyer/life coach Erin Rigsby Hawkins.

Breakfast pastries, fruit, and water are available for all attendees throughout the morning.
